Have you ever found yourself waiting for the right time, the right circumstances, or for everything to fall into place before doing something you've always dreamed of? We tell ourselves we'll begin when things settle down, when we feel ready, or when we know how it will all turn out. But often, it's fear running the show. What if we don't need to have all the answers before we begin?
We keep waiting for the perfect time, but in most cases, it never comes. And while we wait, days turn into months and months turn into years. Sometimes, our dreams remain dreams, not because we couldn't achieve them, but because we never took the first step.
Over time, I've realised that faith is not about having all the answers. It's about trusting God to guide us, even when we can't see where the path leads.
Rumi said it beautifully,
"As you start to walk on the way, the way appears."
Think about driving a car at night with your headlights on. You can see only a few metres ahead, not the entire road to your destination. But that's enough to keep going. As you move forward, the road ahead becomes clearer. Perhaps faith works the same way. We may not know what lies ahead, but we can trust God and keep moving forward, one step at a time.
Paulo Coelho wrote in The Alchemist, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” I like this thought because sometimes, when we take the first step, things begin to change. We meet people who help us, find unexpected opportunities, or discover the courage to keep going. We may even notice coincidences and synchronicities that seem to come at just the right time.
But the journey isn't always easy. We may face obstacles and difficulties along the way. At the time, we may not understand why certain things are happening. When we look back, however, we often see how those experiences, even the difficult ones, have led us to where we are today. As Steve Jobs explained, we can connect the dots only when we look back.
Perhaps that's what taking the first step in faith is all about. We don't need to understand everything right now. We just need to begin, keep moving forward, and trust that things may become clearer along the way.
Of course, taking the first step in faith doesn't mean we won't feel afraid. Fear will always try to hold us back. It tells us we're too young or too old, that it's too late, or that we're not good enough. But we don't have to wait for fear to go away before we begin. We can feel afraid and still move forward.
And remember, there is no wrong time to do the right thing. If something is good and comes from a sincere place in your heart, today, right now, is a good time to begin.
When you begin with faith, you're quietly saying, “I don't know everything, but I trust God to guide me and stay by my side.” You stop trying to control every outcome and learn to accept that not everything is in your hands. Sometimes, things won't go as planned, and you may wonder why. But over time, you realise that things worked out in your favour, even when they weren't going your way.
The Bhagavad Gita offers a beautiful reminder: “Karmanye vadhikaraste, ma phaleshu kadachana.”
In simple words, we should focus on our actions rather than worry about the results. Our part is to do our best with an honest heart and leave the outcome to God. We don't have to worry about how everything will turn out.
Take the first step. Make that one call. Write that first page. Send that message. Say a small prayer and begin.
Most of the time, you feel ready only after taking the first step, not before it. You may stumble or not know what comes next. That's okay. Faith doesn't mean being certain about the future. It means having the courage to keep moving, trusting that you're not walking alone. God is always by your side.
So stop waiting for the perfect time. Take the first step in faith, trust God when you don't know what lies ahead, and let the way appear as you walk.
