Rumi on the Law of Attraction

Rumi on the Law of Attraction

Do not run after what you think you want; instead, look into what you really need.

Recently, I came across a beautiful piece of poetry by the great poet and mystic Rumi.

"When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of distress and anxiety;
If I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without any pain.
From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me.
There is a great secret in this for anyone who can grasp it."

Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi was a 13th-century Persian poet and a Sufi mystic. He was a great spiritual master, and his wisdom and work have influenced and inspired people all around the world.

A poetry is something that everyone can interpret differently and give different meanings. Here, I will interpret the above poetry as per my knowledge and understanding.

Rumi says here that what we think we want and what we really want can be completely different things. Our thinking is driven by society, the environment and the people around us. Our actions are inspired mainly by the world around us. And what we think we want is also influenced by what society wants us to do or wants us to be. And living your life that way can be highly stressful and disempowering.

Most of the time, we have been listening to the voices around us. We are doing things that do not light us up, making us more stressed and anxious. We should not tune into the rules of the world to tell us what we need to do or what we should be. Instead, tune in to your inner voice and listen to it.

There is divine guidance always available to guide you, but there is so much static in our daily lives that we can barely hear it. It is always available to us, but we just need to be still and listen to it, just like the sun is always there, but we can't see the sun because of the cloud cover. You have to go deep and identify your true calling. That is your purpose; that is what you are born for. That is what you truly need.

Rumi says that what you really want comes from the soul, which is a part of the larger universe. And so what your soul wants, the universe wants you to have. So, listen to that inner calling, that inner voice that whispers to you at all times.

Make the craving of your soul your desire and take action. And you will see that the whole universe conspires to make that happen. This is what he means by what you want also wants you.

Rumi wants us to listen to that innate wisdom, move forward on that path, and have a strong faith that the universe will support us, and everything will work out. Trust the divine guidance that is available to you at all times. And as you will step forward, you will find the ground beneath your feet. As Rumi quoted,

As you start to walk on the way, the way appears.

When we run after what we think we want, we vibrate at a frequency of doubt, fear and anxiety. These are all the low vibes. Rumi wants us to change our frequency and tune into higher frequencies of calm, peace, love, harmony, faith and grace. He wants us to trust that voice and follow what it says. That voice is the craving of our soul, the voice of the universe.

When you welcome that divine guidance in your life, the whole universe will conspire to make that happen. You will begin attracting people, circumstances, resources, etc., that will support you, and things will fall into place automatically. The entire universe will work in your favor.

That's what Rumi means by what you need will attract you and without any pain. Synchronicities and coincidences start happening as if the whole universe is working on your behalf. The divine forces start coming to your assistance, and things start to unfold perfectly. This is when the magic happens. This is the real law of attraction.

And hence, Rumi says,

What you seek is seeking you.

This is the great secret that Rumi is talking about. Give up your need to control things and circumstances. Otherwise, you will always live in stress and anxiety. Listen to your soul and work in that direction. Do not resist that voice. Surrender to the greater power, and do not think that you are in charge. Trust the divine guidance and watch the magic unfold.
