Do you think you have lost all your motivation in life and can’t achieve any more? Do you think that turning your dreams into reality seems impossible? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, this article is for you.
This is a real-life story of a first-ever two-time Olympic gold winner in a 25-meter rapid fire pistol event, Karoly Takacs. In 1938, Karoly was the best pistol shooter in Hungary. He had won all the national championships of that time. And everyone was damn sure that Karoly would be a gold winner in the upcoming Olympics in 1940. Karoly had done training for years, and he had only one goal in his mind, to make his right hand the World’s best shooting hand. It was his only focus. But destiny had a different plan for him.
Karoly was in the army, and during army training in 1938, he lost his right hand due to a faulty grenade explosion. And he was only left with his left hand, which he could not use even to write. At this point, Karoly had only two choices: either he could repent and mourn all his life for his loss and blame his destiny or focus on what he had and create his destiny. He chose the second option. As Aristotle once said,
It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.
For one month, he had to undergo treatment in the hospital. Karoly was determined to continue his shooting career and started training with his left hand.
After one year, in 1939, he returned to the national championship that was going on. Other shooters were participating, and they were happy to see Karoly coming to cheer them. But Karoly was not there to cheer anyone. He was there to compete with them. And all of them were shocked to know that. Nobody knew that Karoly had been training for the last year.
Everyone was competing with their best hand, but Karoly was competing with his only hand. And guess what, Karoly won the national championship that year. And now, his entire focus was on the Olympics in 1940.
But due to the world war, the 1940 Olympics were cancelled. Then he focused on the 1944 Olympics. But that was also cancelled due to the same reason. Now his focus was on the 1948 Olympics.
He was now 38 years of age, and it was challenging to compete with young players. But the word ‘difficult’ was not for Karoly. He won the gold medal in the 1948 championship. He then participated in the 1952 Olympics and again won the gold medal. No one in history had won the gold twice in this Olympics competition. Karoly created history.
Karoly had a strong belief and determination that he could become the World’s best shooter. He focused hard and prepared harder, and that made him succeed. He had tremendous willpower; no one could stop him from achieving what he wanted.
In our life, we often focus on the things that we do not have, the things that are missing. And that becomes our excuse for not achieving success in our life. But in reality, as soon as you shift your focus on what you have, instead of what is missing, everything changes.
Shifting your focus is the game-changer.
As Tony Robbins said,
Where focus goes, energy flows.
You have to shift your focus to solutions instead of problems.
Karoly Takacs focused on the solution. He did not focus on what was gone. He focused on what he had, making him the World’s best shooter.
Once you focus on the solution, you must work hard and be persistent. Never give up, even if you fail several times. Every failure will take you a step closer to success. You have to keep failing until you succeed.
Remember, life is a battlefield, and you are the warrior. Every day, life will offer you problems and challenges. You have to believe in yourself and fight hard to win this battle of life. You can either break down due to life’s challenges or create a breakthrough.
